The new Patek Philippe Ref. 5935A-001 World Time flyback chronograph is the first stainless steel version of a model that combines two of the most emblematic Patek Philippe complications.
The vintage look of this reference is balanced by the “carbon” motif in the center of the opaline rose gilt dial which gives a modern touch to the ensemble. This pattern was previously used for the reference 6007A launched in 2020 to celebrate the new PP6 manufacturing building in Plan-les-Ouates.
The charcoal gray gold applied hour markers and hands are treated with luminescent coating for enhanced readability in darker environments.
The watch comes in a classic round case measuring 41 mm in diameter with a thickness of 12.75 mm. It features the same winglet-style strap lugs that were a key design element of the 1940s and 1950s World Time watches. Water resistance is guaranteed up to a pressure of 3 bar (30 meters / 100 feet).
The World Time function simultaneously indicates the time in 24 time zones. It is based on a patented mechanism that can correct all displays using the corrector button at 10 o’clock which advances the city disk and the 24-hour ring counterclockwise in one-hour steps as well as the hour hand clockwise, also in one-hour steps.
During this process, the World Time mechanism and the hour hand are uncoupled from the movement to make sure that the amplitude of the balance or the steady progression of the minute hand are not affected in any way.
The hour and minute hands indicate the time in the city and time zone whose name is shown at 12 o’clock.
The time in the 23 other zones can be quickly and easily determined with the city disk and the two-coloured 24-hour ring which instantly tells the user whether it is day or night in the respective city and time zone.
The chronograph has a start/stop pusher at 2 o’clock and a reset pusher at 4 o’clock that also doubles as a flyback pusher. When it is pressed while the chronograph is running, the sweep hand flies back to zero and a new time measurement is started automatically.
Because the chronograph hand is powered via a vertical clutch, it can also be used as a permanently running seconds hand without risking undue wear and without affecting the rate accuracy and power reserve of the watch.
A small gap between the city disk and the 24-hour ring accommodates a narrow-second scale for chronograph measurements. The small counter at 6 o’clock displays the chronograph minutes up to half an hour.
Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and offering a power reserve of 50 to 55 hours, the self-winding caliber CH 28-520 HU is showcased through the sapphire-crystal display back. Flawlessly finished, it features a 21K gold central rotor decorated with circular graining and an engraved Calatrava cross.
Delivered with two calfskin straps – grained taupe and beige with a nubuck finish – that are secured to the wrist by stainless steel fold-over clasps, the Patek Philippe Ref. 5935A-001 World Time flyback chronograph has a price of Euro 64,390. patek.com
